PAST EXPERIENCE:

Historic Building Renovation and Strengthening:

540 S. Broadway – Arcade Building (12 Story, steel frame, built in 1920’s) Adaptive Re-use seismic strengthening and renovation project, Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles.  Strengthened the building with concrete shear walls and frames.  The strengthening was optimized using nonlinear evaluation techniques per criteria contained in FEMA-356.  The seismic strengthening was based on the City of Los Angeles Adaptive Re-use Ordinance.  Degenkolb Engineers.

540 S. Broadway- Arcade Building, Los Angeles. Past project experience with Degenkolb Engineers; Adaptive reuse of 12-story steel framed office building.

Rowan Building (12 Story, steel frame, built in 1910) Adaptive Re-use Renovation, Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles, CA, Designed new concrete frames and shear walls for the seismic strengthening of an existing steel framed building that has hollow clay tile floor arches.  Risha Engineering.

Biscuit Lofts (8 story, steel frame, built in 1924) Adaptive Re-use Renovation, Los Angeles, California, Designed the seismic strengthening for the conversion of the manufacturing building to residential lofts.  The seismic strengthening included adding new concrete core walls and foundations.  The strengthening was optimized using nonlinear evaluation techniques per criteria contained in FEMA-356.  The conversion included new roof top units, a new concrete parking structure, and a new mechanical platform.  Risha Engineering.

San Bernardino Santa Fe Depot Seismic Strengthening, San Bernardino, California, Provided structural engineering services for the seismic retrofit of a 60,000 sf concrete building originally constructed in 1917.   Degenkolb Engineers.

Hotel Del Coronado (wood framed, built in 1888) Seismic Strengthening, Coronado California, The project involved the seismic strengthening of the original signature Ballroom, Crown Room, Main Lobby, and the guest room wings.  The seismic strengthening was based on the California Historical Building Code.  The construction was phased with portions of the hotel open to guests.  Degenkolb Engineers.

Hotel Del Coronado (URM) Smokestack Seismic Strengthening, Coronado California, Provided structural engineering services for the seismic retrofit of an existing 100 foot tall URM smokestack.  A new shotcrete interior lining was added the full height of the stack.  The underlying bearing soils were strengthened by the compaction grouting method.   Degenkolb Engineers.

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Renovations – Provided structural engineering design services for architectural improvements to the 1920’s historic concrete hotel building.  Improvements included; converting a second floor room into a bar with two bowling lanes, renovating the Johnny Grant Suite, upgrading the roof to an exclusive bar and roof deck.  The bowling lanes required supporting pinsetter machines on new steel framing that span to support points located on the existing concrete structure capable of supporting the additional loads.  The new roof top deck required extending two new stairs from the hotel’s existing internal stair cases through the roof framing for access.   Brandow & Johnston.

Seismic Strengthening and Renovation  Projects:

Toy Loft; Seismic strengthening and adaptive re-use renovation of a 6-story, 1920’s non-ductile concrete industrial building.  Seismic strengthening included adding concrete shear walls.  Los Angeles, California.  Degenkolb Engineers.

Toy Box Flats; Seismic strengthening and adaptive re-use renovation of two 7-story buildings; one 1950’s non-ductile concrete frame and a 1910 steel frame with masonry infill.  Seismic strengthening included adding concrete shear walls.  Downtown Los Angeles, California.  Brandow & Johnston.

2117 East 7th Place (URM) Seismic Strengthening, Los Angeles, California.  Degenkolb Engineers.

6th Street Lofts Adaptive Re-use Renovation, Los Angeles, California. Converted an early 20th century warehouse to live-work lofts by adding a new second floor to the interior of select portions of the floor plan.  New concrete masonry block (URM) core walls and shear walls provided the building’s seismic resistance.  Risha Engineering.

6th Street Lofts, Los Angeles. Past project experience with Risha Engineering Group; Adaptive reuse of early 20th century warehouse.
